Facebook removes Instagram accounts posing as American voters in suspected Internet Research Agency disinformation campaign
On October 22, 2019, Facebook announced that it had removed 50 fake accounts from Instagram due to suspected impersonation of American voters in swing states that “bore all the hallmarks of the Internet Research Agency.” Per an analysis from Graphika, the accounts posted content in support of Bernie Sanders or Donald Trump, while attacking Joe Biden’s candidacy from both sides of the political spectrum, and occasionally also attacking Elizabeth Warren or Kamala Harris. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the IRA is “a Russian organization engaged in operations to interfere with elections and political processes.” Evgeniy Prigozhin, “a Russian oligarch who is closely identified with Russian President Vladimir Putin,” provides funding and support for the IRA.
