Russia suspends its tariff-free trade preferences with Moldova for political purposes
On August 31, 2014, Russia suspended its duty-free trade policy with Moldova, adopted when the two countries signed the Russia-Moldova CIS Free Trade Agreement in October 2011. The Russian government did not provide an official justification for the decision, though it came in the months following the conclusion of Moldova’s Association Agreement with the European Union. In July 2014, Russia banned the import of Moldovan meats and fruits, likely in response to the Association Agreement as well.
