Twitter removes malicious accounts associated with suspected Russian government-backed Internet Research Agency
On June 13, 2019, Twitter announced that it had removed accounts “reliably” linked with state-backed organizations including the Internet Research Agency. Malicious activity included “the amplification of political propaganda and the impersonation of American politicians, among other terms of service violations.” According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the IRA is “a Russian organization engaged in operations to interfere with elections and political processes.” Evgeniy Prigozhin, “a Russian oligarch who is closely identified with Russian President Vladimir Putin,” provides funding and support for the IRA.
